What is a selfie stick

Do you remember the selfie Elle Degenres posted on Twitter at the Oscars?

How I too wished that Bradley’s arm was longer! I would then be able to see more of my favourite Hollywood celebrities gathered for a picture together. Total views on Twitter will definitely not be just 3 millions.

Well, it is impossible for Bradley’s arm to be longer, but it is possible to take a picture of more people from a further and higher distance. If you have been in a tourist attraction, chances are you probably would have seen someone posing – either alone or with a group of friends – for a smartphone attached to the end of a long stick.

Let’s welcome the arrival of the selfie stick.

What is a selfie stick? As defined on Wikipedia, “A selfie stick is a monopod used to take selfie photographs by positioning a smartphone or camera beyond the normal range of the arm. The metal sticks are typically extendable, with a handle on one end and an adjustable clamp on the other end to hold a phone in place.”The higher-end ones also come with a remote Bluetooth control which gives you the ease of taking pictures when your pose is ready.

I first saw someone using it while I was travelling in China a few years ago. I was stupefied and embarrassed by the act, and never expected it to be all the rage worldwide right now.

Famous personalities such as Barack Obama, Leonardo Dicaprio, Maria Sharapova, Tom Hanks, G-dragon have been seen using the selfie stick. Now, who dare says that the selfie stick is not cool?

If you have not tried using the selfie stick, you should give it a go! It is inexpensive and offers a variety of models and colours. As tourism booms all over the world, the selfie stick will remain as an essential and handy travelling equipment in the years to come to capture precious memories.

The popularity of the selfie stick has even spun other related self-photo-taking devices such as the selfiebrush, and the belfie stick. Will they be as popular as the selfie stick? That remains to be seen. If you are interested to find out more about them, just click on the hyperlinks!
